PROGRAM: SELICHOT Other Festivals | General Background | Activities | Tzom Gedalia | Sources | TESHUVA - תשובהOne of the central themes of Rosh Ha Shanah is teshuva - תשובה. Most people translate teshuva to mean repentance, however the origins of the word are from לשוב which means "return". In Hilchos Teshuva 2:2 Rambam outlines a process of Teshuva: 1. Confession - admit that you have done something wrong. 2. A commitment to try to never again repeat the sin that you have committed. 3. Sincere remorse for having sinned in the first place. 4. A commitment to the future: Teshuva has only occurred when you are put into the same situation and you act differently. Therefore, teshuva can only really be completed in the future. Some questions to consider: - Which one of these steps do you think is most important? - In Rambam's explanation - the "returning" is returning to God. If you are not returning to God then are you "returning" or "repenting"? - Does this process apply to you? Why/why not? Back to Selichot Activity
