Things to see and do in Jo'burg A good Jewish week in Jo'burg. Sunday A really nice place to enjoy on a Sunday for a Romantic couple is the Roodepoort botanical gardens. Situated about 20 minutes out of town, the gardens boast a waterfall, abundant nature, a bit of wildlife and lots of "quite, uninterruptible" places. Another good place to visit in the same light, is the Emmerentia Dam, an natural resource known to promote the odd bit of "romance". For the more adventurous, Gold Reef City spots a pretty good Amusement Park and decent Casino. Monday A fantastic place to visit on a Monday night, is the student village of Mellville. Lots of cool clubs, pubs and coffee bars. Entrance is generally free for students and at certain places drinks are sold at discounted prices. Tuesday A big thing to look out for on a Tuesday night is half-price movies. Depending on the marketing strategy at the time, a club card may be required. Generally, the call is for an 8 or 10 o'clock evening show at Sandton City or The Zone in Rosebank. The more arty type can always go for Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank as well. Wednesday For the lucky ones, Wednesday night can be an evening spent watching videos at home with a loved one in your arms. For others, make a plan… Thursday Thursday night is the really big night of the week in Joeys. The club in-vogue varies often. At the moment Bourbon Street in Randburg is the awesome Jewish Jol. With trendy music and 3 levels, Bourbon must be one of the most impressive clubs in the world and has remained on people's list of favourites for at least 2 years although with varied levels of priority. A hectic evening is had by many, and fond memories resound of a night @ "Bourbs". Friday Most Yidden in Joburg head off to shul on a Friday night. For a good social vibe, try the newly built Sandton and Great Park synagogues. Or for the more religiously inclined there's always Chabbad, Aish or Ohr Samayach. A good shabbas meal is also a good plus. For young people Sunny Road Shul in Glenhazeo is a good bet! Saturday Shul or at least a day-off is definitely a priority. But otherwise, the masses are out in force at Sandton City again. An awesome experience is an international rugby test at Ellis Park or for the brave, a fevstive soccer game at FNB soccer city just outside of Soweto. Saturday night is pretty big, although watch out for school kids who try and play with the big boys. A nice evening may be, supper at a Kosher restaurant like Nandos - Savoy or On The Square, followed by a night at one of Joburg's brilliant new Casinos. That's about that, There are of course the spectacular game parks situated about 30 mins - 2 hours out of Joburg. |
